The analysis of written texts produced by postgraduate students in a non-linguistic specialism demonstrates general lack of lexis skills relevant to scientific discourse in a foreign language. The most common vocabulary error is using the wrong word in a particular context or phrase. To improve postgraduates’ lexical skills the authors argue for training students in the responsible use of online dictionaries and language corpora for second language writing.
