The paper presents an analysis of the nature of correlation between the pronoun I and generic you when both are used with reference to the speaker. As evidenced by linguistic data, extracted from literary texts, alternations of the pronouns present a case of the linguistic opposition based on the distinctions drawn within perceptual and experiential contexts that the pronouns evoke in instances of their use in actual discourse.
